  4. Country Description:  The Republic of Cape Verde consists of several rugged
  5. volcanic islands off the west coast of Africa.  The climate is dry and warm.
  6.  Tourist facilities are limited.
  7.  
  8. Entry Requirements:  A passport and a visa are required.  Evidence of
  9. immunization against yellow fever (if arriving from an infected area), is
  10. required.  For further information concerning entry requirements for Cape
  11. Verde, travelers may contact the Embassy of the Republic of Cape Verde, 3415
  12. Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington D.C. 20007, telephone (202) 965-6820,
  13. or the Consulate General of Cape Verde in Boston.

  15. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities in Cape Verde are extremely limited.
  16.  Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health care
  17. services.  U.S. medical insurance is not always valid outside the United
  18. States.  Supplemental medical insurance with specific overseas coverage has
  19. proved to be useful.  Information on health matters can be obtained from the
  20. Centers for Disease Control's international travelers hotline, telephone
  21. (404) 332-4559.

  23. Information on Crime:  Some petty thievery can be expected.  The loss or
  24. theft of a U.S. passport abroad should be reported immediately to the local
  25. police and to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

  27. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  28. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use or trafficking in
  29. illegal drugs are strictly enforced.  Convicted offenders can expect jail
  30. sentences and fines.

  32. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register at the U.S. Embassy may obtain
  33. updated information on travel and security in Cape Verde.
